Non Owners Insurance Policy

A non owners Insurance policy is a policy that covers damages caused by someone driving a car they don't own. This can include a rented or borrowed vehicle, and most unowned vehicles being driven only on a temporarily basis.

Non owners insurance is important because US state laws mandate that drivers carry documentation showing that they are insured for the auto that they are driving. This includes all cars they drive, whether the auto is owned or borrowed. Typically, this written documentation, provided in the form of a card or piece of paper, shows the name of the state, the name of the insurance company, the name(s) of the insured, the policy number, the effective date of insurance (begin and end), a description of the vehicle, including the VIN number, and contact information (an 800 phone number) in the event that there is an accident.

Even when a vehicle is rented or borrowed, this proof of insurance must be readily available to an inspecting law enforcement officer. If a driver doesn't have the proof, the car can be impounded and that person will be ticketed. The cost for for recovery of the vehicle, plus the court fees, fines, and penalties, is easily in the hundreds of dollars.

If a driver is in an accident and is not properly insured, an injured party can sue in a court of law for property damage to a vehicle or anything else that was damaged, as well as medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and legal fees which alone can amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Bank accounts can be forfeited and future wages can be garnished. Attorneys are expensive, usually charging between $150 to $400 per hour; far more than most of us want to pay out of pocket.

The insurance will cover the basics in case of collision, such as liability, property damage, bodily injury liability, and legal fees in defense of a claim. It will also cover what's called uninsured or under-insured motorist, which is required in some states. Most people don't have the money or resources to properly defend themselves in these cases, but insurance companies do.
